Grimoire Legacy — Aseprite Extension

Animate Anything

Prepare an Aseprite master, generate motion, and select animation frames.

What Is This?

Animate Anything prepares the active Aseprite frame as a canonical master, sends that master through Wan 2.2 image-to-video generation, and lets you choose the frames that become the final Aseprite animation.

Configure the Automatic Master

  1. Open the source sprite and select the frame you want to use.
  2. Leave Neural Pixelate enabled to run the PixelCommit production-v4 pipeline with selective codebook routing, EdgeGain, and balanced cleanup. The default Scale Factor is 4; available scales are 2 through 8.
  3. Leave Palette Reduction enabled to constrain the master. To N Colors defaults to 16 and accepts 1 through 256.
  4. Configure the animation description, duration, and FPS.
  5. Click Generate Animation Frames.

There is no separate preparation button. Generate first composites the active frame, applies Neural Pixelate and palette reduction, locks the result, and then starts Wan. The prepared result is added as a new Animate Master layer on the source frame. Existing source layers and pixels are not changed.

If Palette Reduction is disabled and the prepared image contains more than 256 visible colors, Grimoire automatically reduces it to 256 so the palette can be transferred reliably.

Locked Palette

After automatic preparation succeeds, Animate Anything shows the number of locked colors. The lock contains the distinct nontransparent colors actually used by the prepared master.

The palette is session-only:

  • It remains available while switching between Grimoire tabs.
  • Starting another animation generation prepares a new master and replaces it.
  • Closing and reopening Grimoire clears it.

Use Tools > Palette Transfer to apply the lock to another active sprite.

Generate Animation Frames

  1. Edit Animation Description to describe the motion. The default asks for a centered, front-facing walk cycle.
  2. Set Duration from 0.25 to 10 seconds. The default is 2 seconds.
  3. Set FPS from 1 to 60. The default is 16 FPS.
  4. Click Generate Animation Frames.

Grimoire automatically prepares and exports the locked master, runs the Wan 2.2 14B high-noise/low-noise image-to-video workflow at 512x512, and listens only to its final decoded-image output. Sampler previews are discarded.

Each returned frame is restored before import:

  1. Neural Pixelate runs with the same scale selected when the master was prepared.
  2. Every visible color is mapped to the nearest color in the locked master palette.
  3. The restored image is retained for the frame selector.

No output sprite is created immediately. All restored frames open in Animate Anything - Select Frames.

Select and Preview Frames

The selector starts with every frame marked to keep. Its thumbnail borders show the current state:

  • Green: included in the final animation.
  • Red: discarded.
  • Blue: the active frame used by the ordering controls.

Click any thumbnail to toggle it between kept and discarded. Use Keep All, Discard All, or Invert for batch changes. Move Earlier and Move Later reorder the active frame before export.

Play Selected Frames loops only the currently kept frames in their current order. Set Frame Duration (ms) to control both preview speed and the duration assigned to every final Aseprite frame. It initially reflects the requested FPS; for example, 16 FPS starts at 62.5 ms.

Click Create Animation to create a new RGB sprite containing only the kept frames, in the chosen order. The selector remains open after Create Animation, allowing another selection or timing variation to be created. Use Close when finished. If generation is canceled or fails after some complete frames have arrived, those partial frames still open in the selector.

ComfyUI also retains the unmodified generation outputs separately from the selector:

  • Raw decoded PNG frames are written under output/video with the Wan2.2_i2v_frames prefix.
  • The encoded clip is written under output/video with the Wan2.2_i2v prefix.

Palette enforcement affects only the frames returned to the selector; the raw ComfyUI files remain available for later reprocessing.

Wan lengths are normalized to the model’s valid 4n+1 frame sequence, so the final frame count can be slightly shorter than Duration multiplied by FPS.

Required Wan Assets

This phase expects these files to already exist in the configured ComfyUI installation:

  • wan2.2_i2v_high_noise_14B_fp8_scaled.safetensors
  • wan2.2_i2v_low_noise_14B_fp8_scaled.safetensors
  • umt5_xxl_fp8_e4m3fn_scaled.safetensors
  • wan_2.1_vae.safetensors

Select Download Wan models in the post-setup chooser, or reopen Edit > Grimoire > Installation > Download Models later. Downloads only begin when you press Download Selected Models. If any required Wan file is missing when you enter Animate Anything, Grimoire shows a popup and opens the official Comfy-Org download page.

Current Limitations

  • The source is the composited active frame; importing a separate source image is not available yet.
  • There is no automatic finished-pixel-art detection.
  • Whole-character alignment is not available yet.
  • Per-frame timing, alignment assistance, loop cleanup, and sprite-sheet assembly are not available yet.
